LA MAIN BALADEUSE

We now live in a world of big data, where numerous artworks were digitized and made publicly available, ready to embrace their second life in the digital space. Based on personal works for research in digital art history, La main baladeuse proposes a direct communication with a large variety of painted hands through the own hand pose of the user. The whole process questions the possibility to reinvent the format of painted masterpieces, the way they overcame the process of time and their new significance in our contemporary virtual world. The idea is to rethink the image through computer vision and artificial intelligence tools, which allow us to consume data at large scale and to reconsider our interaction with the flood of digital images, a new story to be told, led by the hand of the user.

Valentine Bernasconi is a young creator from Switzerland born in 1994. First attracted to classic animation techniques,

she now takes advantage of new computational tools thanks to a pluridisciplinary training in art and computer science. Engineer in Digital Humanities from the EPFL (Federal Polytechnic school of Lausanne) and currently pursuing a PhD in Digital Visual Studies at the University of Zurich, she reinterpreted here her own thesis on the historical and computational analysis of hand gestures in Early Modern art.
